CHAPTER TWENTY

Two mornings later, Harry met up with Madeline and her sisters before they entered the Park. Once again, she had to admire his seat. “Good morning.”

Willy nickered at Rose, and she returned the greeting.

“Good morning.” Madeline smiled at him. “It is glorious weather.”

“It is. Especially after the annoying drizzle yesterday.” He came up beside her. “How is the bride-to-be this morning?”

“Good morning, Harry,” Eleanor said. “I cannot stop thinking about everything that must be accomplished. Nothing got done yesterday.”

“Feel free to task me with anything with which I can assist you.” He didn’t expect her to accept his offer, but if she did, he’d be happy to help.

Eleanor gave him a grateful look. “If I can think of anything, I will tell you.”

“As a matter of fact, a great deal was accomplished yesterday.” Madeline’s voice was low, so that only he could hear her. “Matt spoke with Montagu and Eleanor about the settlement agreement.” She glanced at her sister. “Still, it will be a short ride this morning.”

Harry’s father had told him about Worthington’s idea of a settlement agreement. He was determined any lady under his protection would be well cared for.

“Will you be shocked that I am not at all surprised?” Disappointed, but not surprised.

“Let us race.” She pulled a face. “Although it cannot truly be called a race when you insist on pacing with me.”

“Not me.” He assumed an expression of mock indignation. “My horse. I’m starting to believe Willy is smitten with Rose.”

Madeline let out a peal of laughter as she and Rose raced ahead.

“Come, Willy, we must catch up to them.” The horse snorted and started to gallop after his ladylove. “We’ll be in a bad way if she doesn’t marry me.”

As it was, Madeline and her mare had covered about two thirds of the distance to the tree when they reached them, and Willy slowed slightly to keep pace with Rose.

They reached the tree and dropped to a walk. “I wondered how long it would take for you to catch us.”

Willy sidled up to Rose. For a moment it appeared as if he’d put his neck on her withers but thought better of it.

Alice and Eleanor rode up to them.

“I hope Madame will be able to see me today,” Eleanor said to no one in particular.

“If not today, tomorrow,” Madeline said.

“Yes.” Eleanor heaved a sigh. “I just want everything done. Two weeks is both too long and not long enough.”

He wondered if he’d think the same way. Then again, he’d have been searching for a house to keep him busy. “Do I understand correctly that you are traveling to Paris after the wedding?”

“Yes.” She nodded. “Dorie is going to take me to the luggage maker she used and advise me as to what I will require.”

As if by mutual agreement, they turned and walked the horses back to the gate. He glanced at Madeline. “It is going to be like this until they are married.”

“I think you are correct.” She glanced at Eleanor. All of them looked distracted.
