CHAPTER TWENTY
Two mornings later, Harry met up with Madeline and her sisters before they entered the Park. Once again, she had to admire his seat. âGood morning.â
Willy nickered at Rose, and she returned the greeting.
âGood morning.â Madeline smiled at him. âIt is glorious weather.â
âIt is. Especially after the annoying drizzle yesterday.â He came up beside her. âHow is the bride-to-be this morning?â
âGood morning, Harry,â Eleanor said. âI cannot stop thinking about everything that must be accomplished. Nothing got done yesterday.â
âFeel free to task me with anything with which I can assist you.â He didnât expect her to accept his offer, but if she did, heâd be happy to help.
Eleanor gave him a grateful look. âIf I can think of anything, I will tell you.â
âAs a matter of fact, a great deal was accomplished yesterday.â Madelineâs voice was low, so that only he could hear her. âMatt spoke with Montagu and Eleanor about the settlement agreement.â She glanced at her sister. âStill, it will be a short ride this morning.â
Harryâs father had told him about Worthingtonâs idea of a settlement agreement. He was determined any lady under his protection would be well cared for.
âWill you be shocked that I am not at all surprised?â Disappointed, but not surprised.
âLet us race.â She pulled a face. âAlthough it cannot truly be called a race when you insist on pacing with me.â
âNot me.â He assumed an expression of mock indignation. âMy horse. Iâm starting to believe Willy is smitten with Rose.â
Madeline let out a peal of laughter as she and Rose raced ahead.
âCome, Willy, we must catch up to them.â The horse snorted and started to gallop after his ladylove. âWeâll be in a bad way if she doesnât marry me.â
As it was, Madeline and her mare had covered about two thirds of the distance to the tree when they reached them, and Willy slowed slightly to keep pace with Rose.
They reached the tree and dropped to a walk. âI wondered how long it would take for you to catch us.â
Willy sidled up to Rose. For a moment it appeared as if heâd put his neck on her withers but thought better of it.
Alice and Eleanor rode up to them.
âI hope Madame will be able to see me today,â Eleanor said to no one in particular.
âIf not today, tomorrow,â Madeline said.
âYes.â Eleanor heaved a sigh. âI just want everything done. Two weeks is both too long and not long enough.â
He wondered if heâd think the same way. Then again, heâd have been searching for a house to keep him busy. âDo I understand correctly that you are traveling to Paris after the wedding?â
âYes.â She nodded. âDorie is going to take me to the luggage maker she used and advise me as to what I will require.â
As if by mutual agreement, they turned and walked the horses back to the gate. He glanced at Madeline. âIt is going to be like this until they are married.â
âI think you are correct.â She glanced at Eleanor. All of them looked distracted.
